Das Kathmandu-Tal beherbergt die drei historischen Städte Kathmandu, Patan und Bhaktapur, die einst unabhängige Staaten waren und vom 12. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert von den Malla-Königen regiert wurden. In den drei Städten finden sich insgesamt sieben Kultstätten und Heiligtümer, die zum UNESCO Welt-Kulturerbe gezählt werden. Alle von ihnen sind beeindruckende Zeugen menschlicher Schöpfungskraft - manche davon sind über 2500 Jahre alt. Obwohl ihre relative Nähe zueinander es anbieten würde, alle Orte an einem einzelnen Tag zu besuchen, ist es ratsamer, sich zwei bis drei Tage zu gönnen, um jede Stätte in vollem Umfang erkunden zu können. Das Tal beherbergt daneben auch hunderte weitere vorzügliche und prachtvolle Bauwerke, Skulpturen und künstlerische Tempel, die an die goldenen Zeiten in Nepals Architekturgeschichte erinnern.
